Spectacular Autumn Migration

LITHUANIAN WILDERNESS

BEST TIME: September 15th – October 20th

Each autumn millions of birds pass through the Baltic States from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Northern Russia to their wintering places in Western Europe or Africa – Lithuania is located at the narrowest point of this flyway, thus creating a bottleneck effect for millions of migrating birds.

WHERE WE GO

Ventė Cape in Western Lithuania

The tour starts at the Ventė Cape in Western Lithuania, a location where you will find the biggest bird ringing station in the world. This station was established back in 1929 and witnesses up to 800,000 birds flying over the Cape each day during the peak of the migration.

WHERE WE GO

Curonian Spit National Park

Our next destination will be the Curonian Spit National Park, a narrow spit of sandy dunes located between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. It is a hotspot for migratory birds, mostly passerines and raptors, which on exceptional days can number up to 1.5 million birds.

WHERE WE GO

Dzūkija National Park

Having experienced the spectacle of the western Lithuania’s bird migration, our tour will turn south to Dzūkija National Park. The park covers a vast area of forests, lakes, natural meadows and various types of bogs including the Čepkeliai Strict Nature Reserve and the adjacent so-called Paramėlis Island, a gem allowing the possibility of Capercaillie. This will mark the end of this tour.
